GenMazes

Free hexagon maze generator Honeycomb mazes with six ways to turn.

Sigma cellsHoneycombAnswer key

Hexagon mazes, also called sigma mazes, use honeycomb cells with six sides. Every junction offers more directions than a square grid, so paths twist in ways solvers do not expect. Pick an outer shape, set the size and export.

About hexagon mazes

In a hexagon maze each cell touches six neighbours instead of four. Passages bend at gentler angles and there are no long straight corridors, so the eye cannot scan ahead as easily. The result feels organic, a little like a beehive or a cell under a microscope.

Hex mazes look great inside a hexagon outline for a tidy honeycomb, or inside a circle or heart for something softer. They work well for bee, nature and science themes, and they are a fresh change of pace in a book full of square mazes.

Questions

Hexagon Maze Generator questions

What is a sigma maze?

A sigma maze is a maze made of hexagonal cells. Each cell has six walls, so a path can turn in more directions than in a square maze.

Are hexagon mazes harder than square mazes?

At the same number of cells they usually feel harder, because the gentle turns and lack of straight lines make it harder to scan ahead.

Can I make a hexagon maze in a heart or circle shape?

Yes. Cell style and outer shape are separate settings in GenMazes, so honeycomb cells work inside a rectangle, circle, triangle, hexagon, diamond or heart.
